Are you looking for the perfect Shawnee National Forest Itinerary? I’ve got you covered!

Growing up just a few hours from Shawnee National Forest, I never knew what a hidden gem was practically in my backyard. Despite living so close, I didn’t make the trip as a kid. It wasn’t until I moved back to the area as an adult that I finally decided to explore it.

In June, my boyfriend and I embarked on a romantic weekend getaway to Shawnee National Forest. We wanted a mix of adventure and relaxation, and Shawnee delivered on both fronts.

From stunning hikes and peaceful swims to charming small-town vibes and cozy accommodations, our weekend was a perfect blend of natural beauty and quality time together. Even though we were just a few hours from home, it felt like we had escaped to an entirely different world.

I mean, who knew the Midwest could look like this???

Towering rock formations, lush forests, and serene ponds make Shawnee feel like a world away from the flat landscapes most people associate with Illinois. Although we were there for only a few days, I know I’ll return again and again.

Whether you’re looking for a quick escape from the city or planning a romantic weekend, Shawnee National Forest has something for everyone. Here’s how we spent our two-day adventure and some tips to help you plan your own unforgettable Shawnee National Forest itinerary!

Shawnee National Forest Itinerary: A Perfect Romantic Weekend Getaway in Illinois

Friday: Arrive in Elizabethtown, IL

We kicked off our Shawnee National Forest itinerary with a leisurely drive to Elizabethtown, a charming riverside town where time seems to slow down.

Where to Stay in Shawnee National Forest: The Historic Rose Hotel

A white two-story house with a wrap-around porch and an exterior staircase, adorned with patriotic bunting. This is the Historic Rose Hotel, the yard is green with lush trees providing shade. Several chairs and potted plants decorate the porch, suggesting a welcoming, cozy atmosphere.

We checked into the Historic Rose Hotel, a beautifully preserved bed and breakfast dating back to the 1800s. The hotel’s riverfront location and cozy, antique-filled rooms set the mood for our romantic getaway.

The Historic Rose Hotel, built in 1812, is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Illinois. Originally a tavern and inn for river travelers, it has hosted countless visitors over the centuries.

The current owner, Patty, was an absolute delight. After accidentally double-booking, she gave us a huge discount to rebook. Her warm hospitality made our stay special, and the homemade breakfast she prepared was delicious.

Dinner: E’Town River Restaurant

Takeout container with fried catfish, baked beans, and coleslaw on a blue table. Another similar container is partially visible in the background. E'Town River Restaurant is perfect as part of your Shawnee National Forest itinerary.
A person in a cap sits at an outdoor table with a plate of food, including fried items, beans, and coleslaw, under a striped umbrella on a sunny day.

After settling in, we headed to E’Town River Restaurant for dinner. Located on the Ohio River (yes, it’s floating ON the water), this spot offered hearty comfort food and stunning views.

There, I had what might be the best catfish I’ve ever tasted. The crispy, flavorful catfish was so irresistible that we went back the next day for another serving!

The sunset views from the restaurant’s balcony were spectacular. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying delicious food made for an unforgettable experience.

Saturday: Exploring Shawnee National Forest

Garden of the Gods

A scenic view of weathered, layered rock formations with patches of green vegetation, set against a backdrop of blue sky and distant green hills. The rock formations appear rugged and natural.
Two people are sitting on a large rocky outcrop with a lush, green forest stretching out behind them under a clear blue sky. Both are dressed in casual hiking attire, smiling, and appear to be enjoying the scenic view.

A rugged rock formation with layered, weathered textures stands tall beneath a clear blue sky. Green leaves from overhanging branches partially frame the scene, creating a contrast between the natural stone and lush foliage.

Saturday morning, we started our day early with a trip to Garden of the Gods, one of the most iconic spots in Shawnee National Forest. The short hike to the observation area offered panoramic views of the massive rock formations. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and marvel at the natural beauty right here in Illinois.

Bell Smith Springs

Next, we went to Bell Smith Springs, known for its crystal-clear swimming holes and scenic hiking trails. We spent the morning hiking, dipping our toes in the refreshing water, and soaking up the peaceful surroundings.

It’s a great spot for a picnic. Restaurants are few and far between in the area, so enjoying a quiet lunch surrounded by nature is a good idea.

Cave-in-Rock State Park

A person in hiking attire and a baseball hat, holding a camera, stands inside a large, dimly lit cave within Cave-in-Rock State Park. They appear to be looking up at the high, textured rock ceiling. The ground is uneven, and the cave walls are rugged with shades of brown and ochre.

In the afternoon, we visited Cave-in-Rock State Park, home to a large, historic cave overlooking the Ohio River. The cave has an interesting history as a hideout for outlaws and pirates in the 18th and 19th centuries. Exploring the cave was fun little detour, and the views from the park were breathtaking.

Ice Cream at Riverside Mercantile

Before heading back to the hotel, we treated ourselves to some well-deserved ice cream at Riverside Mercantile in Elizabethtown. It was the perfect way to cool down and cap off a day filled with adventure.

Sunday: Nature and Wine

Heron Pond Preserve

A person wearing a gray shirt and blue cap is strolling on a wooden boardwalk surrounded by lush green trees. The elevated boardwalk, complete with railings, winds through the serene Heron Pond Preserve.
A blue heron stands in a lush, green, swamp-like area surrounded by trees and dense vegetation. The bird is partially obscured by branches and foliage as it wades through shallow water covered in duckweed, embodying the serene beauty of a pristine heron pond preserve.

Sunday morning came too quickly, but we made the most of our last day. After a hearty breakfast and checking out of the Historic Rose Hotel, we drove to Heron Pond Preserve. This serene wetland is known for its ancient cypress trees and a floating boardwalk.

We opted for a peaceful hike along the Todd Fink Trail, though canoeing is also a great way to experience the preserve. Cache Bay Outfitters offers both guided tours and canoe rentals.

Shawnee Wine Trail

A dark, wooden cabin with a steep roof and multiple levels is surrounded by tall trees. The sun peeks through clouds in a bright blue sky above, casting a slight glow on the structure and creating dappled light across the scene.

Before heading home, we explored the Shawnee Wine Trail—a must for any Shawnee National Forest itinerary.

We visited Pomona Winery, a unique spot specializing in wines made from locally grown fruits other than grapes. They offer seven table wines and three fortified dessert wines, each receiving multiple awards.

We enjoyed a delightful tasting flight, and the woman who served us was so much fun! Her enthusiasm made the experience memorable, and we went home with two bottles of their award-winning wine.

Though we only had time for one winery this trip, we’ll definitely return to explore more of the Shawnee Wine Trail. Each stop promises its own unique character and a chance to sample more of the region’s excellent wines.

Tips for Your Shawnee National Forest Itinerary

  • Pack a Picnic: Restaurants are few and far between, especially in remote areas. Packing a picnic for lunch is a great idea, especially if you plan to spend the day hiking or exploring.
